WEEK 26 - EVALUATION

Evaluation
1. How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
2. How does your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
3. How is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
4. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

1.      How did you use media technologies in the construction and research planning and evaluation stages?
From researching two local newspaper as a guideline to make my original newspaper, I used ‘the sun ‘and ‘daily mail’. From using these two articles, I was able to create three different templates on In-Design that I would use for my newspaper. From the three templates I choose one which was quite similar to my front cover. Here is a picture below.

Below is the three templates and also the one I used for my front cover.

I  further went on to researching I found out that ‘the sun’ newspaper had a website ,where you could access any information, so I knew at one point in making my article I would have to ,decide another way in which I would promote my newspaper. i also viewed other newspaper which gave me ideas of layout, the colour theme ,how the article is written, and other essential aspects in a newspaper.
Here is a picture of ‘The Sun’ website:

This is the sun website I came across whilst researching on, different types of newspaper articles.

I then went onto Photoshop to edit all pictures that I was going to use, and then imported it onto In-Design. My entire layout was created on In-Design. I used In-Design when creating all layouts for every time I needed to construct a layout. In- design was the main software I used to complete most of my task.

Then when creating my radio advertisement, which was how I decided to promote my newspaper article, after working in the studio, I need to alter a few things. So I used ‘Adobe Audition’ to put everything together. I really didn’t have to edit a lot, the fact my radio ad was quite low, all I had to do was normalise it, so it’s much clearer and louder .I had to make sure the background music did not over power the voice of the advertisement. So I had to balance it out through normalising. After completing it and making sure any errors was removed, I had to export to an audio file so that it can be played anywhere.

This is a print screen of what the Adobe Audition looks like.

2.      How does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Media products have expanded in the sense that new technologies are been created, so there are sp many ways in which people can access thing. Media production allows global institutions, to have control over different companies. An example of a global institution would be ‘Disney’ ‘Emap’ and ‘Ipc’. One way in which they dominate media production could be said through using technology such as blackberry and I-touch phones, which makes things easier to access, because they can access it through the use on internet on their phone.
Here is my research and my original newspaper article

This is the ‘Daily mail’ and my original newspaper ‘Lambeth times’. There are similarities and differences. Looking at the lead line, daily mail article tends to stand out more, whilst my colour photo tends to be much clearer and brighter .the layout is quite different in the aspect that my class field is at the bottom of the page, which follows the convention of local newspaper, whilst on the daily mail the class field comes right after the nameplate. This shows that after research I didn’t want my newspaper to look exactly like my research, so I avoided any sort of imitation or like a splitting image of my research, but obviously following convention of how a newspaper article should be.

This is the inside page of ‘Daily Mail’ and my official inside page for my newspaper article. The layout is completely different .my newspaper is o the left hand side, while the research is on the right hand side. The way the layout is different is, that my maid article is at the top of the page, whilst in the daily mail article the article is at the bottom. Also the lead line is positioned in two completely different ways. The daily mil is clearly right at the top, and my lead line comes right at the bottom of my colour picture. However the daily mail picture quality does not reach the standard of mine when looking at clearness.

Normally in posters you rarely see pictures on a poster, but I decided to put image on mine to challenge conventions and also because it might appeal to my target audience more .in terms of layout there is a fair similarity, excluding the image on mine which makes it different. I made sure my newspaper followed conventions i.e. how it is layed out and theme colour of black and white. On the other hand my newspaper also has it own qualities as to what makes it different, in some ways it also conforms and challenges the classical convention of local newspaper. For example, “The Sun” newspaper reflects reality by , “politics, economy, crime, religion, sports, arts and culture, fashion and lifestyle ,the rich, the poor, the stars, the ordinary” it covers all peoples actions, whilst my newspaper tends to cover current life scenarios happening in today’s society, i.e. illness, education and etc ,so its portrays such life scenarios which is for my audience, because they are living around the area ,where such is evident, and is necessary, they know what is happening around them. my lead line, colour photo are all related to each other so it makes it much easier for my target audience to get a clear view of what is happening and in order for them to understand . also my poster which was part of my ancillary task was linked to the lead line on my main front cover, because it makes my lead line more clear, and gets the message across better to my audience, so in a way they all anchor each other for a better understanding to my target audience. Altogether all convention is used in one way helped me with my media product.

3.      How is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The way in which I have combined my product, can be said to be unique and interesting because they anchor one way or another. My main front covpage links in  with my  poster for my newspaper ,because my poster was reflecting what my main story on my front page is about, which gives my audience the idea of what news is in my newspaper.
My media product can be said as narrowcasting, because it aimed at a specific audience, which I have mentioned ,young working class from age 16 going upwards, so it ties in with my newspaper in terms of who my audience are. However from the blumer and kats theory of uses of gratification ,stating individuals might choose and use a text for such as ,diversion, personal relationships, personal identity etc. the way my newspaper corresponds to this theory, through using personal identity, my newspaper article covers the story of a young diagnosed teenager at 13,it gives a little insight of what aids ,the disease is doing to her, so in order words people are learning from the information provided and can relate to it if they tend to find any of the symptoms happening to them so not only are the learning ,but they can find themselves being reflected in the text.  On the other hand the hypodermic theory says media is like syringe which injects ideas, attitudes and beliefs into the audience. Connecting this with the characteristics of my newspaper, I decided  to use the normal black and white colour scheme ,because it is used in all newspaper, also it follows convention of how a newspaper colour scheme should be, so resorting to another colour might not make my newspaper look original and realistic. Also it is a colour scheme that appeals to both genders which makes it fair distinction.
My main photo connotes with my headline because my headline talks about a young teenager being diagnosed with aids, my picture reflects and connotes this through the facial expression in the picture, and the clarity to empathise the illness. Also my main task and ancilarry1 both relates because they both insinuating the same story about aids and what it does to people. My inside page story also links to my main cover, because it shows on my main product a little story of what is inside my inside page, also it is also another teenager who in this scenario, is not suffering from illness, but helping people like the young teenager portrayed in my front cover,so they don’t get caught up in such  drastic measures. My radio advert ,however covers all three, my main cover,my inside page ,and poster, because it talks about local news of what is happening and everything you would find in the newspaper
I believe that I was successful in the combination of my products because they anchor one another. My front page ties in well with my newspaper poster because this will enable the audience to know what news is covered in my local newspaper, this will attract my audience because they would want to find out more about my newspaper and would end up buying it. Issues such as representation is highly recommended because my newspaper covers issues on the target audience which is aimed at ,so it encourages them to read my article .
4      . What have you learned from your audience feedback?

I printed out a copy of my main cover, inside page and local poster and asked my audience the advantages and disadvantages of my products. So I recorded an audio of the response to it, this is posted below.

WEEK 25

Here is the ancilarry editing, below are print screen from Adobe Audition

Here is a print screen, shown ,how i changed the volume of my radio advert,by 'normalising' it so that it sounds much loud and clear. luckIly ,i only had to make changes of normalisation, because my radio advert was recoded in the studio,so all changes and alteration, was done whilst making the advert. For example, the music in the background was added, after that had been done my whole radio advert came down to 27 seconds as shown above in the print screen.so it followed convention of radio advert as it was not too short, neither was it too long.

WEEK 24

THIS IS THE TRANSCRIPT FOR MY RADIO ADVERTISMENT
“Lambeth times (pause) is the new weekly newspaper catering for the people of Lambeth .Covering on entertainment,   tax and crime, upcoming events within the friendly borough. Take part sending letters about your neighbourhood so it can be published in the newspaper ju8st for you.
Lambeth times giving you all the information you need at your local newsagent now”

Below are changes which I made after, feedback, on how to make my radio advert not to sound dull. Because I believe the start was a bit to dull, so I made changes by repeating the name of my local newspaper three times to emphasise on it, and from most adverts research, you come across some adverts which repeat in order to get the message across of what is being promoted. In my case it’s a local newspaper.

“Lambeth times! Lambeth times! Lambeth times! is the new weekly newspaper catering for the people of Lambeth .Covering on entertainment, weather,   tax and crime, upcoming events within the friendly borough. Take part sending letters about your neighbourhood so it can be published in the newspaper just for you.
Lambeth times giving you all the information you need at your local newsagent NOW!”
I also decided to add, the background theme music, I wanted something not to fast or not to slow, but something which flow, so I decided to use LANBRINTH – let the sunshine as it fitted the criteria of what I needed.

ancilary two research 23

This is the questionnaire i made ,to find out what my audience might like to hear or what they what are their expectation, this also helped because through my result i was able to base how i would structure my radioadvertisment . i.e when deciding how long it would be ,there was a high percentage who agreed on 0 - 3- seconds,i figured it would be sensible not to make it any longer, because they could get put of easily.

WEEK 21

This is my article in my inside page  'KAYLA LOVES LONDON'

KAYLA BROWN the 17 year old, has been working really hard, to help people her age who have given up in life. She is the organiser of the ‘BRING PEACE’ youth club. In this youth club, so much activities is  done too see everyone can benefit from living in London the types of activities include the following: helping with cvs, career advice jobs, university applications, unemployment, loans and other problems young teenagers might find hard trying to tackle by their selves. Kayla has been recognised to be one of the  first teenager , who is very motivated to see other people of her age do well in life in order to make London a better place, and she is currently studying maths ,economics and accounting, yet is still able to find time to help at this youth centre. She is looked up to by other teenagers, making them feel anything is possible with hard work. The government has also promise to open a much to open a much big centre to help her as she has had a great impact on most teenagers.

This is a short story of the side bar
METROPOLITAN POLICE take more action in tackling down who murdered the young Abdul-Kareem and they are yet to come with the murder. One of the officers said ‘we have three in custody, who are not willing to talk. And until they speak they would remain there’. So far it is seen that the police are not willing to let this case go, until they get the murder, because they are been accused of not helping.’

WEEK 20

This is the details of how how i came up with my inside page

This is my side, that has important stories, about other important things happening, that is in side my local newspaper .
This what my side bar contains:
‘WANTED’ story of a murder (image above)
‘METROPOLITAN POLICE take more action in tackling down who murdered the young Abdul Kareem and they are yet to come with the murder. One of the officers said “we have three in custody, who are not willing to talk, and until they speak they would remain there”. So it is seen that the police are not willing to let this case go, until they get the murderer, because they have been accused of not helping and working well for a better community. Continue on pg5’
‘UK’s next top model read pg4’
This is my main colour photo ,with my leadline at the bottom of the picture ,as you can see there is still a gap in my article this is because i havent finished writing it,im currently working on it .

This my classfield ,with my advertisment which is at the bottom in my inside page of newspaper

Below is my original inside page :

This my final piece of my inside page with everything altogether.

WEEK 18 - ANCILARY TASK 2

My second ancilary either had to be a radio advertisment or website. i choose a radio advertisment to promote my newspaper article, because most people due to technology tend to listen to radio i.e on their way to work in their car,on mobile phones and etc. so i decided this would be my secon ancilary,as it may appeal to my audience.

Here is research on radio advertisment on local newsapaer :

"To some extent radio and newspapers have similar strengths. Both offer exceptional flexibility to planners, with short lead times, variable copy size/length and geographical flexibility among theirmost important strengths. They are both portable and personal media too, and habitual - used on a daily basis. They also come in national, regional and local versions (although we have focused here on nationalpress, because planners tend to treat this separately from the more complex localised press market). These are also both huge media – Commercial Radio (despite robust competition from the BBC) reaches nearly 32 million people each week, and average issue readership for the national press is over 33 million. But that is probably where the similarities end. This section looks at the distinctive functionalcharacteristics.RadioRadio is a “real-time” medium People listen to the radio in real time, in other words, the time when they consume it is the time when it is broadcast (it is very rare for programmes to be recorded for later listening, although a small but growing number of listeners use the internet to catch up on “appointment to hear” programmes which they have missed). For the advertiser, this means that radio messages can be broadcast at the times of day when theyare most likely to have an effect on the consumer:
  • messages about road safety heard while driving
  • messages about food ideas heard during meal-planning times
  • messages about entertainment venues heard during “launchpad” phase (early evenings Thursday, Friday, Saturday). "
  •

After researching i found out that most radio advertisment are no longer than 60 seconds. so i decided that i would make my my radio advertisment maximum 30 seconds minum 27 seconds. it also shows from my research that most radio adverts are not that long. i also think its a great advantage because then most people would be willing to listen to it,because its short and brief. if its too long, they could get put off easily.
on the other hand, it is essential that you have a short / catchy ad so then it atracts people to want to listen to it.

WEEK 17 - PRESENTATION FEEDBACK

Feed back from my main task ,was that I had followed convention of how a newspaper should be through the use of the black and white them ,because all newspapers are have the back and white theme. Also my advertisement where the classifield is, followed conventions ,because it was a car adverts, which you normally see in most newspaper . However my newspaper was criticised in the aspect of the advertisement not being as regular adverts would be, because there is only a advert of a car, most tend to have more advertisement.

WEEK 16

Below is the final design of my poster, which i created in In-Design. i had to copy my template from my previosius  front coveer onto my poster, because its essential to have your nameplate ,from the reasearch i did. then i had to come up with a cathy phrase 'GRAB YOUR COPY NOW'. However theleadline is the most important and the photo being used because this is the main focus theaudience wold be concentrating on,so it had to be a headline that appeals to my target audience.
whilst trying to come up with an idea of what my headline should be, i decided i wanted it to relate to my front cover artcle headline so i ended up with 'AIDS RISING RAPIDLY IN YOUNG TEENS'. this was because my front cover article was about a young teenager who had been diagnosed with Aids.

WEEK 15 - Ancilary task part 1

Here is a mood board for my first ancilary task which is newspaper posters ,that i have gathered while researching..

Here is a mood board of different local newspaper posters, as you can see the posters are mostly of text, written in bold ,with their name plate above. So with all of this research i would be able to conclude how my poster is going to come out. However looking at 'the sun' newspaper poster it not only features text but it has an image tends to be more different as this is a what i would like to layout my poster.

i further went on to produce a questionaire to see what, my audience would like to see on the poster of my newspaper article . Below is the questionaire from asking 10 people .

From my questionare, majority want text and image on the poster, because both would draw their attention, however not a lot of people from my questionaire results, realy read newspaer posters. this has ledt me to conclude that my poster would contain both text and image as it appeals to the audience.   Below is a picture of my template for my poster, whch was designed in Indesign,i decided import an image onto it,which challenges the conventions of a poster.

WEEK 14

This is two template layout on how my inside page could look, after researching other local inside page article,i decided to draw out a ,layout of how i would want my inside page to look like ,so that is what is shown above.
My name plate is going to be in the top right hand corner, while the page number would be in the top left, my article is going to be seperated into to columns, then a side bar on the right hand side, with my colour photo on the left hand side and lastly  my classfields at the bottom of the page.

Sunday, 10 April 2011

WEEK 13

I had to make changes with the headline, because previously ,my newspaper and nameplate had the same text, but whilst researching i found out that this barely happens,so i made immediate changes so that my nameplate can stand out morerather than my headline and nameplate looking the same.
So i changed the 'headline' to 'times new roman' not to sophisticated, just simple, but also attractive.

This is the inside page from 'the sun' and 'daily mail' newspaper article ,i realised that the sun newspaper had more advertisment ,and daily mail is more text based.

WEEK 12

This is my official local  newspaper. its very similar to my first layout, hardly anything has changed between the two layouts, the only difference ,like i have pointed out previously,is the classfield ,how i substituted one of the advertisment,to a community promotion to benifit the local community.

WEEK 11

This is the adverts i have decided to use for the front cover of my magazinze

This is a car advertisment :
CAR SALE £2000
including M.O.T
Call: 0845 456 321

This here is a slowgan to the community which relaltes to the picture of the bin.
'help the community by recycling waste products '

As shown above a few changes had been made compared to the template of my classfield,in the sense it is only promoting one advertisment ,and the other is just a local community promotion telling people to  keep the community clean by recycling .

In my research ,its rare to find such promotion on a local newspaper, telling the community to keep environment clean, but i wanted my newspaper to be different in tht aspect, also due to the fact my local newspaper is new,it could be highlighted as a key point as to why it can be seen as different to other local newspaper.

I decided to put my adverts at the bottom of my front cover because, from my research i found out that most newsper adverts tend to be at the bottom, therefore my newsopaper meets conventions of newspaper, because most classfield are normally at the bottom of the page.

Thursday, 7 April 2011

WEEK 10

My headline  is 'TEENAGER  DIAGNOSED WITH AIDS AT AGE 13' I decided to choose this headline beacuse the picture i took relates to this  headline, because the image below as you can see ,the female looks quite ill and sad,so it connotes with the headline.

Here is picture of how i have layed out my newspaper, the leadline is in black and background, white because from my questionaire, alot of people preferred the black and white theme and also all newspaer are black and white, and any other colour, would make my newspaper looked unrealistic and unproffessional as to how a newspaper article should look

My article is about a young teenager who has been diagnosed with aids, and is surviving through medication, which has resorted to her loosing her younger sibling, because they are now in care homes.the reason being is because her mother is unable to take care of them, for she is blind,so it is not reasonable or sensible to put more burden onto the mother.
.

This is my article :

"Charlie Smith aged 12 is the youngest child to be diagnosed with AIDS .She has been giving few medications that she is using now, as the disease has spread around her cells that she can barely walk, or move. A source said she admitted that she slept with men from age 10 so she could put food on the table for her blind mum and two younger siblings. Her mum was interviewed and admitted to be aware of the job her daughter was taking part in, she argued she had try to stop her, but there was so much she could do for a blind person like her could do.
But Charlie, is facing a very epic moment right now, because the doctors said “gradually she would become to loose some of her hair” also the fact she has a low immune system, she is at high risk of surviving of the medication she has been prescribed. This sad message has caused her mother to be depressed and who is currently sick at the moment. Therefore, they are left with no other option than to put the two young siblings in care."
My article as you can see is fairly short,as to other types of newspaper article thisi is because in my content page ,my article is quite long and in depth, but on  a different story. so it would be more reasonable to have one long story, rather than two long stories.
theres has also been some changes so that the layout of my article meets the convention of a local newspaper.  For example starting of a newspaper with block capitals ,so that it draws readers attention, also from researching 'daily mail 'i found out they use block capitals to start of thier articles.also researching other articles you barely come acroos an artcile that the lead headline starts in lower case.

week 9

The font i decided to use was 'Stencil std' .I choose to use this font because i couldnt find any font ,that i wanted, and i wanyed my font to be different from every other newspaper article because after research i came to conclusion i would not like to be using the same font as any other local newspaper.
Looking at my previous name plate i hadnt researched as to different types of fonts suitable for a newspaper, but now i made changes by changing the type of font used ,also i didnt include that date established in previous name plate it was only the date. However in my new template the date, price and webstie link to my newspaper is all included,so that my newspaper looks much more proffesional and original.

My logo of the london eye also blends with the name of my newspaper, because it is around the lambeth area.
However, it shows that i have developed better skills, and understanding of how a newspaper should be arranged and positioned in the right order.
By looking at the template of my name plate that I first designed,I decided to make changes for instance the issue date is now positioned below the name plate but in the same row as the 'establishing date', 'price' and 'website link' as it looks more presentable and formal. Hence, having the issue date slanted at the top right hand corner of the newspaper is not appealing to the reader.

week 7

Below are images i have collected for my front cover ,i would explain how i have used photoshop to edit or change them from the original,or whether i kept it as the original.

This picture is represnting the trademark of lambeth,i decided to use this picture because its is highly recognised and well known london eye, which happens to be in the lambeth region. I also thought it would be of good significance since mostly everyone in the lambeth area knows about it . i decided  not to chnge my picture as i believe it was perfect for the way i wanted it to look.

This is my main photo for my headline topic,as you can see,i have made no changes because this is how i wanted my picture,i also thought it loooked very clear enough ,which is essential as it is the main photo on the front cover of my newspaper article.it would also come clear why i choose this picture as it goes with my headline .

This is one of the pictures of my advert, its a picture of a car,i decided not o change it because as an advert pictures are meant to come out clear,so i choose not to alter ait in any aspect,in order to change the effect as the picture is clear enough.

This is also a scecond advert,of a bin, telling people to make use of recylce bins,so they can help the community be a more neat environment, and less waste of products that can be used again. however i decided to edit this picture because as u can see , the sun is reflecting on the bin,so i needed to tone it up ,so that the colour blends in with the background properly and so that its clear enough.

i used photoshop to make sure the picturr is a bit darker than the normal,by going to image

week6

This is a little collage of different local newpaper that i was reaserchig on ,in order todecide what to base my story line of,consideringmy newspaper article is within the lambeth south rehgion,as we can see above most of the newspaper article in one way or the other has somethig to do with south,or lambeth

Monday, 28 March 2011

week 5

I made a question asking 10 young teeenager from ages 18 and over ,because this is my target audience for my newspaper .

This questionnaire shows that 5 out of the ten young  teenagers i asked ,found the name lambeth times more attractive, and majority carries the vote , which means this name would be the most appriopate, whereas the others tend to carry less votes so i would not be using any of them .

From my chart above it shows that alot of peopple tend to pay 20p - 40p for their newspapers,so i have come to the conclusion of making it 10p due to the fact ,i might have a high market of consumers, especially if its cheapper than 20p.

My newspaper was going to be sold in local corner shop, and my survey just proved this would be the right step to take, for 90% said they purchase their local newspapers from corner shops.

For this ,i had a drawn outcome as to which i would make visible and which would be the highlight of my newspaper,so i have choosen to make both name plate and photo the center of attention in my local newspaper front cover.

as you can see, black and white has more people ,and also from research on local newspaper tend to be black and white,so it make more sense if my newspaper article is black and white

Wednesday, 16 March 2011

week 4

This is a little brainstom of ideas of wehat i was thinking should feature in a newspaper article .

Brainstorming what you find in a Local newspaper

-          Name
-          Price
-          Target audience
-          Colour
-          Lead headline (first female fights in the cold war)
-          Lead story
-           The image ( i.e. photo of the female with the boxing gloves)
-          Dateline
-          Class field
-          Advertisement
-          Layout
-          Fonts
-          Colour
-          By line
-          Jump line

Week 3

During my research on the type of layouts that can be used  i decided to try out  different layout that i may consider using. By using in-design i came uo with these layouts below.

I have come to the conclusion that these layouut would help me decide how i am going to layout my official newspaper article.

I am most likely going to use the first template as i would want my lead storyline to be the front photo topic, meaning the photo that would be used ,the story would be related to it.

Friday, 21 January 2011

week2

Looking at both newspapers which I have studies there are some similarities  and differences.
One major difference is the layout and the producers of the newspaper .
The sun shows a range of colour such  as ‘red’ which is very attractive, whilst the daily mail sticks to the black and white theme.
the layout is different  in the sense that the sun tends to have more stories compared to the 'Daily mail' which has one main stories and barely any advertisements. this was esssential because then i could relate to how the fonts and layout has been used to appeal its target audience.

I further went into researching on whether i could ,find any of the fonts used, but it was unsuccessful. However i did find out the top ten fonts mostly used ,which are poynter series, franklin gothic, helvetica, utopla, times, nimrod, century old style, interstae, bureaau grotesque and miller.
In order to make mine different i decided i would not be using any of theses typos, because i dont want my newspaper to be recognise or look similar to every other newspaper.
