1. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research planning and evaluation stages?
From researching two local newspaper as a guideline to make my original newspaper, I used ‘the sun ‘and ‘daily mail’. From using these two articles, I was able to create three different templates on In-Design that I would use for my newspaper. From the three templates I choose one which was quite similar to my front cover. Here is a picture below.
I then went onto Photoshop to edit all pictures that I was going to use, and then imported it onto In-Design. My entire layout was created on In-Design. I used In-Design when creating all layouts for every time I needed to construct a layout. In- design was the main software I used to complete most of my task.
Below is the three templates and also the one I used for my front cover.
I further went on to researching I found out that ‘the sun’ newspaper had a website ,where you could access any information, so I knew at one point in making my article I would have to ,decide another way in which I would promote my newspaper. i also viewed other newspaper which gave me ideas of layout, the colour theme ,how the article is written, and other essential aspects in a newspaper.
Here is a picture of ‘The Sun’ website:
This is the sun website I came across whilst researching on, different types of newspaper articles.
Then when creating my radio advertisement, which was how I decided to promote my newspaper article, after working in the studio, I need to alter a few things. So I used ‘Adobe Audition’ to put everything together. I really didn’t have to edit a lot, the fact my radio ad was quite low, all I had to do was normalise it, so it’s much clearer and louder .I had to make sure the background music did not over power the voice of the advertisement. So I had to balance it out through normalising. After completing it and making sure any errors was removed, I had to export to an audio file so that it can be played anywhere.
This is a print screen of what the Adobe Audition looks like.
2. How does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Media products have expanded in the sense that new technologies are been created, so there are sp many ways in which people can access thing. Media production allows global institutions, to have control over different companies. An example of a global institution would be ‘Disney’ ‘Emap’ and ‘Ipc’. One way in which they dominate media production could be said through using technology such as blackberry and I-touch phones, which makes things easier to access, because they can access it through the use on internet on their phone.
Here is my research and my original newspaper article
This is the ‘Daily mail’ and my original newspaper ‘Lambeth times’. There are similarities and differences. Looking at the lead line, daily mail article tends to stand out more, whilst my colour photo tends to be much clearer and brighter .the layout is quite different in the aspect that my class field is at the bottom of the page, which follows the convention of local newspaper, whilst on the daily mail the class field comes right after the nameplate. This shows that after research I didn’t want my newspaper to look exactly like my research, so I avoided any sort of imitation or like a splitting image of my research, but obviously following convention of how a newspaper article should be.
This is the inside page of ‘Daily Mail’ and my official inside page for my newspaper article. The layout is completely different .my newspaper is o the left hand side, while the research is on the right hand side. The way the layout is different is, that my maid article is at the top of the page, whilst in the daily mail article the article is at the bottom. Also the lead line is positioned in two completely different ways. The daily mil is clearly right at the top, and my lead line comes right at the bottom of my colour picture. However the daily mail picture quality does not reach the standard of mine when looking at clearness.
Normally in posters you rarely see pictures on a poster, but I decided to put image on mine to challenge conventions and also because it might appeal to my target audience more .in terms of layout there is a fair similarity, excluding the image on mine which makes it different. I made sure my newspaper followed conventions i.e. how it is layed out and theme colour of black and white. On the other hand my newspaper also has it own qualities as to what makes it different, in some ways it also conforms and challenges the classical convention of local newspaper. For example, “The Sun” newspaper reflects reality by , “politics, economy, crime, religion, sports, arts and culture, fashion and lifestyle ,the rich, the poor, the stars, the ordinary” it covers all peoples actions, whilst my newspaper tends to cover current life scenarios happening in today’s society, i.e. illness, education and etc ,so its portrays such life scenarios which is for my audience, because they are living around the area ,where such is evident, and is necessary, they know what is happening around them. my lead line, colour photo are all related to each other so it makes it much easier for my target audience to get a clear view of what is happening and in order for them to understand . also my poster which was part of my ancillary task was linked to the lead line on my main front cover, because it makes my lead line more clear, and gets the message across better to my audience, so in a way they all anchor each other for a better understanding to my target audience. Altogether all convention is used in one way helped me with my media product.
3. How is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
The way in which I have combined my product, can be said to be unique and interesting because they anchor one way or another. My main front covpage links in with my poster for my newspaper ,because my poster was reflecting what my main story on my front page is about, which gives my audience the idea of what news is in my newspaper.
My media product can be said as narrowcasting, because it aimed at a specific audience, which I have mentioned ,young working class from age 16 going upwards, so it ties in with my newspaper in terms of who my audience are. However from the blumer and kats theory of uses of gratification ,stating individuals might choose and use a text for such as ,diversion, personal relationships, personal identity etc. the way my newspaper corresponds to this theory, through using personal identity, my newspaper article covers the story of a young diagnosed teenager at 13,it gives a little insight of what aids ,the disease is doing to her, so in order words people are learning from the information provided and can relate to it if they tend to find any of the symptoms happening to them so not only are the learning ,but they can find themselves being reflected in the text. On the other hand the hypodermic theory says media is like syringe which injects ideas, attitudes and beliefs into the audience. Connecting this with the characteristics of my newspaper, I decided to use the normal black and white colour scheme ,because it is used in all newspaper, also it follows convention of how a newspaper colour scheme should be, so resorting to another colour might not make my newspaper look original and realistic. Also it is a colour scheme that appeals to both genders which makes it fair distinction.
My main photo connotes with my headline because my headline talks about a young teenager being diagnosed with aids, my picture reflects and connotes this through the facial expression in the picture, and the clarity to empathise the illness. Also my main task and ancilarry1 both relates because they both insinuating the same story about aids and what it does to people. My inside page story also links to my main cover, because it shows on my main product a little story of what is inside my inside page, also it is also another teenager who in this scenario, is not suffering from illness, but helping people like the young teenager portrayed in my front cover,so they don’t get caught up in such drastic measures. My radio advert ,however covers all three, my main cover,my inside page ,and poster, because it talks about local news of what is happening and everything you would find in the newspaper
I believe that I was successful in the combination of my products because they anchor one another. My front page ties in well with my newspaper poster because this will enable the audience to know what news is covered in my local newspaper, this will attract my audience because they would want to find out more about my newspaper and would end up buying it. Issues such as representation is highly recommended because my newspaper covers issues on the target audience which is aimed at ,so it encourages them to read my article .
4 . What have you learned from your audience feedback?
I printed out a copy of my main cover, inside page and local poster and asked my audience the advantages and disadvantages of my products. So I recorded an audio of the response to it, this is posted below.
